For MacOS: There are a number of options for MacOS. If you only want to configure the side buttons (Buttons 4 and 5) to the ‘Back’ and ‘Forward’ functions, the SensibleSideButtons program is the best option. This program can be downloaded for free from sensible-side-buttons.archagon.net. Another option is USB Overdrive, which you can download from usboverdrive.com. A third, paid option is Steermouse.
